Without Buckhorn Day on the calendar for 2009, the Church of St. George’s annual Corn Days celebration is the only community celebration being planned in Long Lake this year.
That celebration got the official go-ahead from the Long Lake City Council during its June 16 meeting. The council approved the church’s application 4-0 as part of its consent agenda. Councilmember Brian Carpenter did not attend the meeting.
Corn Days is now officially scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 9.
To gain approval the church applied for a special event permit, a noise variance permit, a temporary 3.2 percent malt liquor license and a permit to hold charitable gambling during the event.
A memo to the council from City Clerk Jeanette Moeller said that in addition to those permits the Corn Days 4-mile Run was also included in the application. The Gear West staff will run that event, she said, but it was added to the church’s application to “streamline the application process.” Because it’s included in the application, the overall responsibility for the race is on the church.
While the final schedule of events has not yet been released, the application states that the annual event “offers children and family friendly games, activities, live entertainment, a four-mile race, food and beverages, bingo, pancake breakfast, spaghetti dinner, exhibits and craft vendors.”
The annual Corn Days Sunday parade is scheduled for noon, according to the Long Lake Chamber of Commerce website.
In previous years, the Church of St. George has maintained a Corn Days Web site, that features a schedule of events, photos from previous years and driving and parking directions. That information can be found at
