The ISD #108 school board agreed to create an assistant golf coach position during its meeting on March 30.

Activities director Ron Erpenbach told the board an assistant coach was needed to handle the influx of students participating in the sport. Currently head coach Rick Willhite is responsible for both varsity teams, junior varsity teams and junior high teams.

For the 2009 season Erpenbach said almost 30 students have signed up for varsity golf alone.

The role of the assistant coach will be to lead practices and help younger golfers improve, especially on the days Willhite is at a varsity meet. As the program is set up now the other teams can not practice on the days of varsity competitions because a coach can not be present.

The new assistant coach will be paid a wage of about $1,400 for the season.

In other school business, the board took action on a pair of personnel matters. The first action, done via a resolution, terminated the contract of probationary elementary school teacher, Tamara Hedeen as of the end of the 2008-09 school year. According to the resolution, Hedeen’s contract was not renewed due to school “financial limitations.” Board member Carol Lagergren thanked Hedeen for her service to the district.

The second action was the acceptance of resignations from elementary principal Bob Iverson and first grade teacher Erica Lundgren.

Iverson, who was present at the meeting, has been at Central Elementary School for 14 years. He told the board that the school has been a “wonderful place” and the school boards he has worked with have always been supportive.

The board also accepted three donations from area organizations. Target Corporation’s “Take Charge of Education” program donated $1,269.40 to Central Elementary School, $344.49 to Central Middle School and $804.08 to Central High School. The Kopp Family Foundation gave $1,500 for scholarships. Finally, the City of Norwood Young America handed out $8,000 for the Music in the Park program and middle and high school youth activities.

Finally the board received updates on school enrollment figures for 2009-10. During the Feb. 19 kindergarten registration 54 students signed up and as of March 30, 64 kindergarteners were registered.

At the start of the current school year there were 72 kindergartners. In the high school, enrollment remained mostly the same with 369 students registered, a gain of seven so far from 2008-09.

The next board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, April 27, at the Hamburg Community Center.
