Halloween is just around the corner. Along with all of the ghouls and goblins, superheroes, super athletes, Frankensteins and vampires roaming our streets that night, there are also a large number of young people.
Sheriff Bud Olson and the Carver County Sheriff's Office have a number of safety tips to help make this a fun and safe night for everyone.
There are a number of community organizations in the county that provide good, fun alternatives to trick or treating. Look in your local newspaper and community websites for more information.
Choose your costume carefully. Make sure that masks don't obstruct vision and clothes won't cause you to trip and fall but are sized to fit warm clothes underneath. A good alternative to a mask is hypo-allergenic face paint which won't shift and move to cover the eyes.
Whether you buy a costume or make one yourself choose bright colors and flame retardant materials. If your child will be out trick or treating after dark attach reflective tape to their costume. Bring a flashlight as well.
Young children should always trick or treat with an adult or older teenager. Even with children that are a little bit older parents should know what route their kids are taking and what time they are expected home.
Know what your teenagers are doing and talk to them about vandalism. Vandalism is not okay. It can cause thousands of dollars in damage, and ruin Halloween for everybody.
Take extra care and caution while driving. Young ones get very excited when they know there is candy in the area and tend to jump out and run with wild abandon. Slow down, especially in residential areas. Watch for low flying brooms and wraiths.
Have a safe and fun Halloween from the Carver County Sheriff's Office.
