SPARTAN TAILGATING EVENT - Orono Alliance for Education (OAE) organizers are planning a Homecoming tailgating event at 5 p.m. at the OHS football field , featuring complimentary hot dogs, chips, sodas and brownies. The game begins at 7 p.m. and will feature a half-time presentation of OAE’s 2008-09 grant check of $275,000 to suuport program enhancements at Schumann Elementary, Intermediate School, Middle School and OHS

GARDEN GAB SESSION - The Westonka Horticultural Society will host the first of three planned fall Garden Gab sessions at the Gillespie Center, 2590 Commerce Blvd., Mound, from 9:30-11 a.m. The session will include tips on how to prepare perennials for their winter nap, what to do with all those annuals, how to protect your perennials, shrubs and trees from winter kill, how to prepare a beautiful lawn for next spring, and many more topics and tips for fall cleanup. The cost is $5 (free to Westonka Horticultural Society members). There is no need to pre-register. FALL FESTIVAL - The Annual Fall Fun Festival at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, located at the corners of Wilshire and Bartlett boulevards in Mound, plans a day of children’s games, bingo for prizes, and lots of food from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Four musical acts are slated to perform - the Westonka Pop Singers, Karaoke by Merlin, Gillespie Singers and the Clipp-tones. A silent auction is also planned and crafters and vendors will be selling their wares. A portion of the profits will benefit the Westonka Area Food shelf.

BENEFIT RUMMAGE SALE - Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in 3745 Shoreline Drive, Navarre , will hold it’s annual fall sale Oct. 1, 4-8 p.m., Oct. 2, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Oct. 3, 8 a.m.-noon. FALL FESTIVAL - St. Joseph Parish 2nd Annual Fall Festival featuring a free street dance will runfrom 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The event will include carnival games, bingo, inflatables, bake sale, raffle, silent auction, country store, book fair, pull tabs, beer garden. There will be free music and entertainment all day. There is also a pork chop dinner put on by the Catholic Aid Association from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a Harvest Mass at 5:15 p.m.
MPFD OPEN HOUSE - The Maple Plain Fire Department will host its annual open house and steak fry fund-raiser at the station house, 1645 Pioneer Ave. The Open House will run from noon-4 p.m. and will include demonstrations and fire truck rides, and a silent auction. The steak fry will be 4-7 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the department’s Relief Association.

TREK TO THE DECK - To raise awareness of the needs of people in the Westonka area at risk of losing their homes and to help them get back on their feet, the Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN), will sponsor its second “Trek to the Deck” benefit walk, from 12:30-4 p.m. The “Trek” will begin at the Mound Parking Deck and follow a two-mile round trip circuit. At the conclusion of the walk, participants and community members at large are being invited to take in a variety of games, free entertainment, food and a silent auction at the parking deck.
