While education is often associated with children, there are many adults who would like to hone their basic skills, receive a GED or learn how to speak and write English.

Adults with those desires are invited to participate in Adult Basic Education, a free program offered through Watertown-Mayer Community Education. Previously only available in Waconia, the program now meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays at Watertown-Mayer Primary School (313 Angel Avenue NW, Watertown).

Emily Beltz, a teacher with Adult Basic Education, said the class is a comfortable way for adults to improve their skills in subjects like math, social studies, science, and language arts including writing and reading.

“It’s a relatively informal way to work on getting ready to take the GED test or to brush up on basic education skills for going back into the workforce,” Beltz said. “(At this point) it’s a small class with a very friendly, relaxed but hard-working environment.”

The class is held weekly throughout the school year. Adults may start any time and they will work at their own pace, under the guidance of the teacher. Additional classes, including English as a Second Language classes, are available on different days/times in many surrounding communities.

If warranted, organizers may offer childcare if enough participants need it - participants should let them know if that might apply to them. For more information on the Adult Basic Education program, contact Watertown-Mayer Community Education at (952) 955-0280.
