As the start of the school year loomed, the Central School Board may not have been aware of the possibility of taxes in Carver County increasing at a rate of 9.9 percent.

With current economic conditions as they are, one might think that reaching a decision of whether or not to renew the expiring referendum might be difficult, but it was not.

With little discussion, the board voted unanimously to approve seeking $500 per student on the November ballot.

The reason for the easy decision might be that the economic impact to taxpayers may be a bit of a surprise. Preliminary estimations by Ehlers and Associates Inc. find that the overall impact will be a negligible drop in taxes. As an example, a taxpayer with a home valued from $100,000 to $450,000 would see less than a dollar drop in taxes and homes valued at $500,000 to 2, 000,000 would see reductions from $1.15 to $3.60.

Central school district’s current referendum levy, which will expire in 2008, is also for $500 per student. The state average referendum revenue per student is $760 per student. Several schools in the area are asking for significantly more pre student in referendum revenue, including Chaska, which has a referendum in place for $1070 per student, Glencoe-Sliver Lake at $680 per student and Waconia at $675 per student.

In other business:

  • Negotiations with non-certified staff began Aug. 27 at the district office. Board members Carol Lagergren, James Spille and Craig Pexa will participate.

  • Superintendent Brian Corlett was appointed to the Minnesota Association of School Administrators Federal Advocacy Committee for 2008-09 and 2009-10. The main focus of the group, according to Corlett, will be the renewal of No Child Left Behind legislation.

  • Alissa Friend is the new third grade teacher at Central Elementary. There are still no applicants for the speech/language pathologist; however, Adrianne Klehr, now retired, will work two days per week until the position is filled.

  • Two new College in the Schools (CIS) courses will be added at Central High School: CIS Biology and CIS American History. There are now a total of six CIS courses offered including: CIS College Algebra, CIS Pre-Calculus, CIS Calculus, CIS English Composition and the two courses added this year, CIS Biology and CIS American History.

  • The listing of coaches, assistant coaches and advisors for extra-curricular activities for the 2008-09 school year was approved. There are still a few positions that need to be filled, but they do not include any fall activities or sports.

  • The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Monday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. and will take place in Central High School’s room A240.
